Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying such medications must be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense return of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
