Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
